Analysts predict Oracle to cut thousands of Sun staff after acquisition

By DatabaseJournal.com Staff

Many reports have estimated that Oracle will lay off about half of Sun’s current 27,000 employees. With Oracle CEO Larry Ellison recognizing that Sun is losing roughly $100 million every month in lost sales the layoffs seem to be inevitable.

But because the Oracle / Sun deal is still being held up in the European Commission many Sun employees are surely just holding on. At least until the end of January when things should start to solidify once again.

But one would wonder, as many analysts are wondering, how Ellison justifies the $7.4billion deal in the first place. Clearly having to deal with employees after half the work force is cut, problems with MySQL, and $100 million lost every month is a tough road to travel.
