Shell’s Database Breached

Feb 16, 2010
1 minute read

Shell’s contact database of staff and contractors has been breached – 176,000 phone and email details copied and forwarded to lobbyists and activists opposed to the company. Although the email says that it comes from 176 “concerned staff”, it is possible that the approximately six month old database could have been released by a recently laid off staff member. There are other copies of the data available online as well. The data thieves may have more harm in mind for the company, but Shell is investigating and has brought this matter to the relevant data protection authorities.
