EnterpriseDB Supports Online Game with Nine Million Users

By DatabaseJournal.com Staff

EnterpriseDB Postgres Plus Advanced Server, built on the open source PostgreSQL system, is being used to support Sony Online Entertainment’s Free Realms online game. This multi-player, adventure and social networking game currently has nine million active users, consequently being very demanding on the database system which needs to call up information on each player and feed it into the game’s logic. As well as dynamically updating the player’s info as they progress and interact through the game, and deleting unneeded rows without creating pauses in the game’s operations. Sony chose the commercially supported, high performance system of EnterpriseDB system because it was able to sustain the game’s activities.

EnterpriseDB has said that the lessons it learns from online gaming will be incorporated into future versions of the product and shared with the PostgreSQL development community.
