The beta version of Cassandra 0.7 NoSQL database system has been released to be tested by users for a month. Cassandra 0.7 includes three new features:

  • Support for secondary indexes makes indexing columns in the Cassandra database possible, which in turn makes find a certain data group in a single column easier
  • Rows containing more than two GBs of data in a table
  • And the ability to create families of columns while the database is running

An open source project, Cassandra is used by the popular websites Facebook and Twitter, and was downloaded 14,000 times during the month of July. Also, a poll conducted by Hacker News has found that Cassandra is the sixth most popular database among startup developers.
