Xeround Autoscales MySQL

By Sean Michael Kerner

How do you figure out how much database capacity you actually need?

Database vendor Xeround, which develops a multi-tenant cloud version of MySQL, now has an autoscaling solution to help meet the challenges of unpredictable demand.

According to Xeround, the new auto-scaling feature enables the database to increase resources at user defined parameters. The settings are configured in the Xeround Database Manager console and define the point where the admin wants to scale up. The process also works in reverse to help improve utilization.

Razi Sharir, CEO of Xeround, noted that many cloud providers already provide scaling for applications by adding additional servers and load balancers.

"In contrast, scaling the database in the cloud is much more difficult because of the cloud's stateless environment, and is potentially risky as it can cause a temporary denial of service," Sharir said in a statement. "Xeround's automatic scaling is a major step forward in simplifying the way databases are managed in the cloud."

Xeround also announced this week that its namesake database is available for the Rackspace Cloud.

Xeround first debuted as a MySQL database service for Amazon. The service expanded last month to the Heroku Ruby cloud.
