SQL Editor 4.3 Released

April 8, 2002

Version 4.3 of SQL Editor, a combination explorer and code editor for use with SQL Server databases, was recently released by its author, Bill Neal. SQL Editor makes it easy to find and change code, as well as create release scripts, all from a single Windows-based application.

New features and enhancements in the 4.3 release include an Object History browser feature, enhanced Windows XP support, a new option to hide system objects, the ability to view larger scripts in Script Preview window, an enhanced script list pane (now with mini-toolbar and ability to re-sequence scripts), new validation for Auto Script options, and more.

SQL Editor features designed to make life easier include:

  • Database objects like tables, views, and stored procedures are a mouse click away via hotspot jumps and a tree-view with quick access to individual nodes

  • Object history for comparing old versions of an object, or for retrieving lost code

  • Color-coded syntax to make object code easier to read

  • Find and replace tools to help find and/or change specific tables, columns, or other code fragments

  • The ability to search by object name pattern

  • A Script Contents tool that automatically finds all the recently changed object definitions and script them all in a few simple mouse-clicks, simplifying the scripting process

  • The ability to summarize dependencies for an object

  • A Search Results folder for quick access to the previous results of searches

  • The ability to search by last-modified date, useful for finding recently amended objects

  • An Expand All feature that completely explodes object dependencies

  • The ability to view the graphical object hierarchy in plain text format for use in documents

  • Compatibility with SQL Server versions 6.5, 7, and 2000
