Oracle, Legend Cluster in China

Oracle Friday continued its expansion into Asian markets by inking a deal with China’s largest PC maker Legend Group Limited .

The Redwood Shores, Calif.-based software giant opened its first lab facility in China for development work based on Oracle9i Real Application Clusters, its so-called “Unbreakable” technology. The lab is located in the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park, outside Hong Kong.

A team of about 100 engineers from Legend and Oracle China will now work together on development projects, with the primary focus on mixing Oracle9i Real Application Clusters (RAC) with Legend server technology to create clustered database platform for e-businesses.

Oracle and Legend said they would also look at new joint engineering opportunities, training for sales and technical staff as well as building market awareness for clustered solutions to spark more interest in China.

“Companies in China are looking for ways to save costs and reduce inefficiencies and Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is an excellent option for customers because they can start small and add more capacity as their business grows,” said Oracle vice president, Platform Technologies Division Kevin Walsh. “Our partnership with Legend, which is widely recognized as a technology leader in China, will help us ensure that businesses of all sizes can reap the benefits of capacity on demand and efficiently respond to the fluctuating workloads in an e-business environment.”

The No. 2 business software maker’s partners in the Asian Pacific make up more than 75 percent of its revenues in the region. China is Oracle’s third-largest market in Asia after Japan and Korea, and its fastest growing overall.

The partnership with Legend is also expected to boost Oracle’s overall application business, which analysts’ say is on the cusp of a major rebound after losing market share to IBM .

Based on Oracle’s CacheFusion architecture, 9i RAC is the result of more than ten years of development and the basis for Oracle’s focus Linux and partnerships with Dell Computer , Red Hat and Hewlett-Packard

Having operated in China for more than ten years, Oracle has built a strong customer base including such well-known Chinese enterprises as AsiaInfo, Beijing Da Tang Power Generation, China Banknote Printing & Minting Corporation, China Southern Airlines, Chengde Iron and Steel Company, GuangZhou Metro Corporation, HangZhou Motorola, Shanghai Hitachi and Xiang Tan Steel Corp.

“For post-WTO China to be competitive, each company and industry must be highly efficient and innovative,” said Shenzhen vice mayor Liu Yinli. “We are pleased to witness the establishment of Oracle Research & Development Center as a part of the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Industrial Park family. We hope Shenzhen-based enterprises can take the advantage of these locally available world-class management tools and collaborative research capacity to sharpen their competitive edge.”
