Battle of the Open Source Databases

Although open source databases are picking up steam in the commercial market, breaking into the enterprise market and competing with the likes of Oracle and IBM's DB2 will be tough. "This is rocket science," Aberdeen's Bill Claybrook said.

2003 promises to be a big year for open source products. Linux is poised to keep capturing market share in the server and desktop markets, and Apache undoubtably will remain champion of the Web server sector. Will this year be good to open source databases as well?

Although there are a few open source relational database management systems available these days, two names always come to the forefront: MySQL and PostgreSQL. Of these two leading contenders, is one right for your company? If so, which one?
