Oracle to battle Microsoft on price

By DatabaseJournal.com Staff

[From SearchDatabase.com]

With its 10g database for Windows due for release this month, Oracle announced last week at its annual AppsWorld conference that it will slash prices to compete with Microsoft.

Currently, Microsoft's SQL Server database starts at $4,999 per processor. Oracle's Standard Edition One database is priced at $5,995 per processor. However, Oracle co-president Chuck Phillips told AppsWorld attendees that Oracle 10g will debut at "the same list price per processor as Microsoft."

Several industry analysts said they did not consider the move surprising, given the success SQL Server has had in smaller shops, and the current focus on small and midsized businesses throughout the industry.
