CA-Datacom, release 11 available

By Linda Cole

Computer Associates International announces the availability of Advantage CA-Datacom, Release 11.0. Datacom is a web-enabled database platform, supporting large transaction processing systems, meeting the challenges of extremely large database environments.

This latest release focuses on the needs of customers that have high performance requirements, enabling them to make better use of their growing mainframe databases. Datacom supports multiple applications on multiple platforms. For Example, browser based applications and windows based applications can all access data in CA-Datacom databases. CA-Datacom Release 11.0 is a major release for Z/OS on the mainframe.

A driving force in the database market is that databases are growing at a tremendous rate. Richard Bolesta, VP, Product Marketing stated:

"Over all you don't have a very large expansion of mainframe database licenses. The growth rate is probably around the 7% to 10% level across the entire market. However, if you look at the growth of databases themselves in terms of the amount of data going in, these databases can double in size in the next two years. So even though, let's say, applications may not change, the data that's being brought in through these applications is tremendous. We have focused on delivering enhancements to the CA-Datacom 11 release to help with the performance of massive volumes of data."

Significant enhancements for CA-Datacom include:

  • z/OS resource recovery services (RRS)
  • parallel backup
  • table partitioning
  • 64-bit storage exploitation
  • two-phase commit
  • enhanced performance in multi-MUF environments
  • data sharing
  • QUIESCE and NEWCOPY features address corporate requirements for 24X7 operations to eliminate downtime for core application systems

Another trend developing in the database market is the reduction of skilled mainframe DBAs. The number of Database administrators with top-notch skills in database management is dwindling. Datacom has helped compensate for this by increasing the flexibility and ease of use in release 11 in maintenance and configuration management, as well as being able to deploy with the flexibility needed to manage very large environments. CA-Datacom provides numerous configuration options to provide the flexibility necessary to manage the scalability, while at the same time taking advantage of the additional processor capabilities that z/OS offers. In addition, open systems access using ODBC/JDBC has been enhanced with new SQL standards and new drivers have been added for Java and Linux.

Another major enhancement for CA-Datacom is the integration with the BrightStor CA-Vantage Storage Resource Manager (SRM) product, allowing users to manage storage effectively.

In The Winter Corp. Study, a worldwide scalability competition run by an independent research firm in December 2003, the US Customs and Border Protection took first place in the online transactions processing systems with a system built on Advantage CA-Datacom. Processing more than two billion requests daily, with a peak activity of more than 51,000 requests per second, the system was 13 times faster than the second-place finisher was.
