Gates' eMail Discussed PeopleSoft Stake

SAN FRANCISCO -- Like a pebble thrown into a still pond, Oracle's hostile bid for PeopleSoft (Quote, Chart) sent ripples through the boardrooms of its rivals.

Bill Gates, who after learning about the hostile takeover last June, fired off an e-mail to Microsoft (Quote, Chart) CEO Steve Ballmer asking to consider taking a financial stake in Pleasanton, Calif.-based PeopleSoft or acquiring Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software market leader SAP (Quote, Chart). The e-mail was revealed during Oracle's first day of defending itself against the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust claims.
