TimeSpring Software
announces the availability of its file-based continuous data protection
software for the Windows platform. TimeData, which automatically captures all
changes to application data in real-time, has tightly integrated support for
SQL Server.
TimeData enables DBAs to recapture a precise moment before a
deletion or corruption occurred. A repository, located on a standard Windows
Server is connected by standard Ethernet to the agent on the SQL Server
database. As changes are being made to the database, they are captured,
replicated and maintained in the repository. Included in these captures are
important events on the application layer, database check-points or transaction
completion events.
The products offline processing provides an environment that
presents real production data from the repository and makes it available to
test servers, application servers or additional databases. In addition, users
can take reporting off their production servers, pulling data from the
repository for analytics, reporting, testing and similar types of functions. Moreover,
data views can be broadcast to remote users without the need to shut down the
database.
Another plus with this product is the level of
simplification it provides for backup and vaulting. A challenge faced by DBAs
is the backup window. No matter how you back up your databases, you still have
to schedule the window for periods of low activity to lessen the impact on
production servers. With TimeData, a backup agent can be installed on the
repository and you can do the backup directly from the repository. This
eliminates the need of going back and forth looking at full and incremental
backups that can cause gaps in your protection. TimeData also lets you go back
to a precise moment in time through an interface that is intuitive for anyone
familiar with a standard windows environment.
The TimeData repository is read-only. Once a change is
captured, it is not something that can be accidentally over-written. In
addition to capturing actual data changes, TimeData also captures changes made
to associated meta data such as access permissions.
