Sybase Adaptive Server® Enterprise® (ASE) wins Golden Software Award

By Linda Cole

Early last week, Sybase, Inc. was awarded the Golden Software Award in the database sector for its Adaptive Server® Enterprise® database software. Sponsored by the China Software Association and the China Center for Information Industry Development (CCID), the award was based on a nation-wide survey sent to all of the major users and corporations as well as various websites and publications throughout China. Questions on the survey were carefully developed to ensure an unbiased result, and a committee of well-known experts in the software industry approved the results after a careful analysis. Sybase won the award based on product superiority, technical support, ease of responsiveness and product functionality. Raymond Teh, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Asia Pacific told Database Journal, "We were very happy that Sybase came in first and won the Golden Software Award."

Sybase Asia Pacific operations have been in China for over thirteen years. The first three years they appointed a master distributor in China, but in late 1993, Sybase formed a fully owned subsidiary in China. Today they have close to 500 employees, almost half of which are in sales, marketing, re-sales and consultation. The other half is tech support, hot-line support and Engineering staff.

Sybase is organized in China by vertical industries. While they have geographic coverage, they feel it is more important to group their people by industry, which provides them with specific industry knowledge--allowing them to develop solutions geared specifically to those industries. Dominant industries utilizing Sybase solutions in China are government, telecom, financial services, energy and transportation. Recently they have begun expanding into new verticals not previously covered, such as manufacturing, high-tech and automotive.

Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise is a data management platform that has been widely adopted in the telecommunications, finance, communication, energy and government sectors. . ASE includes built-in self-management tools, wizards to automate routine tasks, advanced XML and Web services support, and real-time message services when used with the Sybase Real-Time Data Services (RTDS) package.
