Database Visionary Stonebraker Sets Sights

Turning the world of database management on its ear, Dr. Michael Stonebraker says the old ways no longer make sense. And he’s doing something about it.

“The current relational elephants are selling one-size-fits-all,” says Stonebraker. “And that one size is a row store.” Stonebraker says that while row stores make sense in the operational world (OLTP), a different model is required for the data-intense world of business intelligence. The new model is what he calls a column store, which is a model currently employed by database stalwart Sybase.
