Popkin Expands Scalability of System Architect Modeling Tool with New SQL Server Support
November 13, 2002Newest Release Addresses Increasingly Complex Needs of Large-Scale Modeling and Enterprise Architecture Projects
Popkin Software, a leading developer of enterprise architecture tools, last week announced the latest release of its flagship enterprise architecture tool, System Architect, version 9.0. System Architect's feature set has been expanded to help businesses and government agencies more easily and quickly develop models and enterprise architectures that reflect the complex IT environments commonly found today.
The latest release features support for Microsoft's SQL Server 2000, which can now be used as a repository for System Architect's encyclopedias. By greatly expanding the number of concurrent users, the tool offers increased scalability which, in turn, drives faster development, improved reliability and transaction control. System Architect is used by organizations worldwide to design models and enterprise architectures, or blueprints of a company or agency's business goals and processes and its underlying IT infrastructure.
"System Architect now offers a comprehensive Enterprise Repository, which is extensible and shareable on a network, to organizations undertaking large-scale, global IT projects that require support for many users at one or several locations," said Jan Popkin, CEO, Popkin Software. "This release focuses on expanding the scope of System Architect's feature set to accommodate the increasingly complex issues of developing, maintaining and customizing architecture and modeling projects. Users tie their development efforts into a single framework, or design an enterprise architecture that is directly tied to their business goals."
"Our team faced the challenge of incorporating a wide variety of models into a single architecture in large-scale, highly complex DOD [Dept. of Defense] projects," said Shawn Wilson, assistant vice president, Architecture Analysis Group, DESE Research Inc., which uses System Architect and its SQL Server feature to develop the enterprise architectures on several DOD's projects, including a multi-billion dollar project that is designing combat systems of the future. "System Architect and the new SQL Server feature offer us a solid platform for integrating requirements across disparate systems and applications much more efficiently. System Architect gives our architecture team an efficient method to gather content from subject matter experts, to analyze that information, then to build comprehensive models."
"The value of enterprise architecture to Investec is very clear," says Waldi Schoonraad, head of Applications and Projects for Investec Asset Management. "System Architect helps us to capture all perspectives, from strategy and planning to analysis, design and implementation. We anticipate even greater benefits with Version 9, as the enhanced multi-user repository will further increase our capability for multi-disciplinary modeling across the business."
In addition to SQL Server Repository support, System Architect version 9 has enhanced its other modeling features:
The newly enhanced System Architect offers an enterprise-level perspective of a business as related to IT. IT management can assess existing IT systems and plan the future of IT infrastructure; ensure established business goals are being supported by IT; evaluate the impact of business changes prior to significant IT investments; and implement a shared, enterprise-wide IT architecture to improve development efficiency. IT project teams can use System Architect to design models at the application, business process or enterprise level.
System Architect ships with a wide selection of generators and interfaces for application developers. A multi-user repository ensures consistency and accuracy across workgroup development, allowing users to interact more seamlessly. System Architect supports various languages, including Java, C++ and Visual Basic, and databases, including Oracle, SQL Server and DB2. System Architect offers comprehensive reporting and documenting systems, and provides HTML generation for model publishing over an intranet/extranet.
