Database Security Possibly not so Secure if Companies sell to Chinese Government

May 4, 2010

On May 1st, the Chinese government put into effect their requirement that any vendor selling one of 13 covered technologies to the government must have their product tested and certified by China’s Certification and Accreditation Administration, which includes the details of encryption technology being disclosed. Database security tools are just one of these technologies. Supposedly the testing is to ensure quality but justified reluctance is expressed by some about giving their encryption secrets to China. Should a company decide to do it anyway, potential customers may be disinclined to also buy that product, feeling for example, that their databases may not be secure.
