With the pending SAP acquirement of Sybase, which is considered a leader and innovator in the mobile data space, it is debated what rival Oracle’s plans are, and they may possibly include Berkeley DB, a small-footprint embeddable open-source database that Oracle acquired in 2006. Recently made available was Oracle Berkeley DB 11gR2 which included new capabilities for smartphones, such as support for the Android mobile platform, while its small footprint makes it easily used by a smartphone’s limited resources.
Oracle Berkeley DB 11gR2 also allows the user to choose a familiar SQL API or the key-value API. Another enhanced feature is simplified data synchronization using the Oracle Database Lite Mobile Server which enables automatic provisioning and synchronization of Oracle Berkeley DB mobile applications and databases.
