New, pre-configured Windows- and Intel-based "ready-to-run" database solutions combine software, hardware, storage and services
Unisys announced Monday a new series of ES7000 packaged server solutions designed to accelerate deployment of database servers for large enterprises. Unisys has partnered with industry leaders Microsoft, Intel, Brocade, EMC, NetIQ and Veritas to offer pre-configured database server solutions packaged for select workloads, a Web-based sizing tool and services for database assessment, implementation and management.
The set of ready-to-run packaged database server solutions will help customers implement total database solutions faster and more easily than if they had assembled the necessary components piece by piece. Available in both cluster-ready and non-clustered configurations, these packages include server, software, networking, storage, services and backup for a range of user workloads. These configuration profiles are designed to handle from 7,000 to 27,000 concurrent users and from 1 to 9 terabytes of storage.
Unisys Database Server solutions have grown out of the company's extensive experience focusing on and providing high-volume, business-critical, large OLTP-intensive database solutions handling complex transactions and maintaining uninterrupted availability in industries that typify such environments, such as those in the financial services, healthcare and public sectors. Partnering with industry-leading application providers, such as SAP, PeopleSoft, Comprehensive Software Systems, QCSI and others, Unisys will tailor specific configurations to meet the needs of customers in those sectors.
As part of the Database Server solution program Unisys offers an extensive array of services designed to help businesses plan, design and deploy database production environments. These services include database assessment, implementation and tuning, upgrade planning, proof-of-concept and database and system administrator training.
Large enterprises have come to understand that one of their most important assets is information and that the need for software and solutions to help keep
this data accessible and "live" has grown. In addition, as businesses and therefore, databases grow, it is increasingly important to house the data on a platform that performs reliably, can run multiple applications and is scalable for future growth. Database solutions built on the ES7000 and Microsoft Windows Datacenter Server platform perform as well as or better, are easier to manage, and can deliver a lower total cost of ownership than Unix-based alternatives.
"Unisys takes a 360-degree view of database management," said Tom Manter, director of Unisys Database Server Programs. "We know that a database implementation is not just about servers and software -- storage and services are just as important to a successful solution. We want to make it easy for customers to be up and running and to grow, taking advantage of the mainframe-class qualities of the ES7000 while obtaining the cost benefits of a Windows-based system."
For businesses whose requirements fall outside the pre-configured solutions, Unisys has created an interactive Web-based database server sizing tool. that allows IT executives to input information regarding transactional workload, system type, storage and availability requirements. It then immediately generates a report with recommendations for optimal systems configurations. The tool also allows customers to gauge the impact of business growth on their database infrastructure and anticipate future system requirements.
The database server sizing tool is available free of charge at www.unisys.com/datacenter/sizing.
