Pervasive Announces Availability of Pervasive.SQL V8 Designed for Rapid Application Development and Deployment
Pervasive.SQL V8 Delivers Increased Performance, Ease of Embeddability and Low Total Cost of Ownership

12.02.02.  Pervasive Software(R) Inc., a leading provider of data-management solutions powering the success of application developers worldwide, today announced availability of version eight (V8) of Pervasive.SQL(TM), the latest release of the company's industry-leading database engine. Built for independent software vendors (ISVs) and value-added resellers (VARs) who primarily serve small and mid-sized businesses, Pervasive.SQL V8 combines performance, embeddability and low total cost of ownership into a powerful, flexible and scalable database engine.

"We are proud to launch the next-generation of Pervasive.SQL which offers the best of all worlds to application developers," said Suaad Sait, vice president of marketing at Pervasive Software. "The new database product not only was previewed by more than 1200 developers, but also was designed and developed according to their needs and early feedback. This involvement has helped us to deliver the best product possible to address the performance, embeddability and total cost of ownership requirements of those building and deploying business-critical applications."

Increased Performance
The dual-access database engine of Pervasive.SQL V8 gives developers the high-speed performance of transactional processing using 32-bit, multi-threaded, transactional access with the robust, full-featured capabilities of SQL relational processing in a single package. In addition, features such as archival logging and automatic server recovery help to ensure that mission-critical data remains highly available.

The performance enhancements in V8 that deliver improved productivity are of particular interest to Rick Gibson, an OEM technical analyst at FREEDOM. "While testing Pervasive.SQL V8 client/server with a report writer used in conjunction with our product, I was able to reduce the process time to one minute from what took 20 minutes previously," said Gibson. "The additional caching included with V8 has significantly and effectively reduced the network traffic that was previously generated."

Ease of Embeddability
Seamlessly embedded within thousands of applications and sold as a bundle with thousands more, Pervasive.SQL is the data-management foundation that delivers superior value with minimal maintenance required.

According to Aberdeen Group, an IT market analysis and positioning services firm headquartered in Boston, Pervasive delivers "near-lights-out" administration, which is a key value differentiator from the competitive products that frequently require database administrators. With its small footprint, easy installation and simple deployment, Pervasive.SQL V8 is the embedded database solution of choice for many application developers.

Pervasive Software's commitment to open industry-standard technologies and computing platforms ensures applications evolve along with the business. Pervasive.SQL V8 features extensive support for industry-standard APIs, including ODBC, JDBC, ADO / OLE DB and Active X. For even tighter integration, Pervasive offers the Distributed Tuning Interface (DTI) that lets developers control the database engine with the V8 tool set from within their application. Featuring integration with a number of leading development tools such as Delphi, Magic, Data Access, C++, Visual Basic, Java, .NET, Perl, JSP, ASP and PHP, Pervasive.SQL V8 gives developers the flexibility to choose the best framework to develop and deploy applications.

In fact, according to Eric D. Miller, manager of IT for U.S.-based Miller Welding & Machine Company, deployment of Pervasive.SQL V8 on .NET was a top priority. "My main concern before testing was the integration with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET. The new release of V8 accomplishes it well," said Miller. "I also like the improved utilities that are offered with the product. Overall, it meets my expectations. I look forward to using V8."

Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
V8 reinforces Pervasive's success in bringing to market industry-leading low TCO. Its self-tuning engine simplifies maintenance and virtually eliminates the need for a dedicated database administrator. The Pervasive system analyzer accelerates deployment and troubleshooting. In addition, the auto-reconnect feature seamlessly reconnects an application to the server in the case of minor network errors or power outages.

Rudy Steyaert of Belgium-based C-LOGIC N.V. shared specific comments on these features following his testing of V8. "As for V8, we have been most impressed by the self-diagnostic functionality of the Pervasive system analyzer. This enhanced feature allows for troubleshooting and simplified deployment across multiple platforms," said Steyaert, managing director of C-LOGIC.

Full Suite of GUI Utilities
The Pervasive control center in Pervasive.SQL V8 provides developers with one central console for all database management. With interfaces to all the Pervasive.SQL utilities, developers can customize the console by adding or removing other applications, tools or utilities to reflect their specific needs.

"The Pervasive control center and enhanced network diagnostic tools are very much welcomed. They work well and let you know exactly what is going on," said Chuck Yarbrough, chief executive officer, Delta-South Communications. "Additionally, the Pervasive system analyzer is much more useful in V8. Good job!"

Availability and Pricing
Pervasive.SQL V8 is immediately available for multiple platforms and configurations, including Windows, NetWare, Linux and is backward compatible with prior versions of Btrieve. and Pervasive.SQL on all supported platforms. Pervasive.SQL V8 Desktop Workgroup engines are priced at US $25. Pricing for full client/server engines starts at US $845 for a six-user license. Volume discounts and upgrade pricing are also available.
