Return business week for a given date

By DatabaseJournal.com Staff

>>Script Language and Platform: SQL Server 2000 User-Defined Functions
This user-defined function will return the Monday before or the Sunday after any given date. I use this function primarily to categorize service activities for our business; our weekly calendar runs from Monday to Sunday.

Usage is simple:

SELECT dbo.udfBusinessWeek(GetDate(), 'B')

to return the Monday of this week, and

SELECT dbo.udfBusinessWeek(GetDate(), 'E')

to return the following Sunday.

CREATE FUNCTION udfBusinessWeek (@Date as smalldatetime, @BeginOrEnd as
RETURNS smalldatetime AS
/*This function will return the first or last day of the business week,
   using the framework of Monday - Sunday */

    DECLARE @Output smalldatetime

    IF @BeginOrEnd = 'B'
         SET @Output = CASE WHEN DATEPART(dw, @DATE) = 1
                                 THEN DATEADD(d, -6, @DATE)
                            ELSE DATEADD(d, -DATEPART(dw, @DATE)+2,
    ELSE IF @BeginOrEnd = 'E'
         SET @Output = CASE WHEN DATEPART(dw, @DATE) = 1
                                 THEN @DATE
                            ELSE DATEADD(d, -DATEPART(dw, @DATE)+8,

    RETURN(CONVERT(smalldatetime, CAST(@Output as char(11))))
