An independent survey on what technology companies found successful in mitigating data security breaches and complying with security mandates was given by Securosis and Imperva during June and July 2010. Results of the survey include:

  • Combining traditional approaches with technology protecting databases and applications is the most effective approach to data security
  • Data theft because of malicious intentions ranks the highest, insider breaches come next, with hackers and then accidental data breaches following
  • Most companies don’t know if data breaches occurred, or didn’t know if they had
  • PCI-DSS is the primary driver behind companies’ data security programs
