Oracle Debuts MySQL Workbench 6

Oracle is advancing the state of of its MySQL Workbench solution with a new release. MySQL Workbench 6.0 has both community and enterprise release versions, which are designed to improve the development and administration of MySQL databases.

“This MySQL Workbench release is designated 6.0 due to the major changes in the GUI and workflow,” Monica Kumar, senior director of product marketing at Oracle, told Database Journal. “It has also been modernized and streamlined for better database design, development and administration by developers and DBAs.”

The community edition is open source and freely available under the GPL license and includes the redesigned GUI. The main goal of the GUI redesign is to help enable a more fluid interface for database development and management.

The MySQL Workbench 6.0 community release includes wizard-based migration support that enables uses of competitive databases, including PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase SQL Anywhere and SQLite, to move to MySQL.

There is also a new Schema Inspector as well as new table data search capabilities. The system has also been improved with better server status summary and configuration information to further aid database developers in the development and management of MySQL.

Kumar noted that the MySQL Workbench Enterprise Edition provides the following additional features over the community edition:

  • Schema & Model Validation
  • DBDoc
  • GUI for MySQL Enterprise Backup
  • GUI for MySQL Enterprise Audit

The MySQL Workbench 6.0 community and enterprise editions will work with both commercial and open source versions of MySQL as well as potentially the MariaDB fork of MySQL.

“Oracle tests MySQL Workbench with all of its editions of MySQL,” Kumar said. “It should work with forks that are compatible with MySQL.”
