Considering that SQL Server 2008 R2 is an interim release, Microsoft
has introduced many significant changes in this R2 release. While many of the major changes like the PowerPivot feature are in the BI space, other big changes exist as well, such as the new editions of SQL Server 2008 R2, which Microsoft has better aligned with the Windows Server
editions.

Notably, unlike the other R2 releases coming out of Microsoft, SQL Server 2008 R2 will still be provided in a 32-bit x86 edition. Let’s look at seven editions of SQL Server 2008 R2.
