The number of data security breaches we hear about is
growing every year.  There probably are many more that are not reported or that
go undetected.   Protecting your data may not be a choice, but instead might be
mandated by law.  In order to protect your company’s most valuable asset, its
data, you need to be diligent about building a security architecture, which
appropriately secures your data.

In order to do this, you need to take a number of steps to
setup your environment to make sure your data is not exposed to individuals that
should not have access.  Basic security practices are no longer practical for
securing your confidential data.  You need to take on a more proactive approach
to cataloging your data, develop patch management practices, and adding multiple
layers of authentication, to name a few things you should do to make your data
more security.

Read this research paper by the Forrester Group to find out
other things you should consider to secure your data.  This paper should provide
you with a good understanding of the different components and processes you
should put in place to improve your existing architecture.  Having a robust
security architecture will provide you the best defense against data being
stolen or compromised.
