This procedure will send mail using the CDONTS object installed by Microsoft SMTP service. The Microsoft SMTP service comes with IIS, but can be installed and run independently of IIS. The procedure handles multiple attachments as well as subject, cc, bcc, HTMLFormat, and priority options. This is tested only SQL Server 7 only.
Use of SMTP mail requires a full email address rather than aliases acceptable to Exchange.
Why use SMTP to send mail rather than SQLMail’s xp_sendmail? Because at times SQLMail can be difficult to configure and overkill for the simple messaging requirements of the SQL Server. Microsoft SMTP Service doesn’t require an exchange client or a mailbox configuration. Note that SQLMail is required if you wish to send alerts.
