Gupta Technologies Releases SQLBase 8.5

By Linda Cole

Gupta Technologies, LLC. announces the latest release of its embedded database, SQLBase.

SQLBase is a relational database that has historically run on a variety of operating systems including DOS, Win 3.1, Win 32, Novell NetWare platforms 3X/4X. SQLBase 8.5 runs on Win32 platforms, Novell NetWare 5 and 6. A LINUX version of SQLBase is underway and will be available in the near term.

The product is known for its DBA-less operations that reduce database administration almost to zero. Gupta Technologies Charlie McLouth stated "It's an embedded database you can deploy worry free; it's a non-DBA database meaning you don't have to have an expensive DBA to maintain it, in most cases it's the receptionist that's the DBA for SQLBase."

Gupta Technologies was formed in 1985 by Umang Gupta and Bruce Scott (the original author of the Oracle Database engine). Scott and Gupta broke away from Oracle and formed their own company with a vision to have the first relational database that ran on a PC. Their goal was realized in '87/'88 with a product called SQLBase. Currently, there are over one million deployments of SQLBase worldwide.

New Features in 8.5

The most compelling feature for new and existing customers alike are the performance improvements in this particular release. SQLBase 8.5 is 40% faster than version 7.5.1, the most commonly deployed version of SQLBase. McLouth claimed, "We also have customer quotes that indicate that they're experiencing performance improvements anywhere in the range of 125% all the way up to 250%."

In addition to over all performance improvements, SQLBase 8.5 has significantly improved scalability. This improvement is a bonus in addition to the long-term performance work being done. This additional feature addresses locking and concurrency issues specifically. McLouth stated, "SQLBase has a page granularity locking level but we've reduced the length of time locks are held internally, we've seen significant improvements in multi-user systems with this new enhancement. What this means to our valued VARs and OEMs is that they can write one application suitable for a single-user lap-top installation - or a fifty-user system and they can deploy SQLBase for any type of installation without changing their application code.

SQLBase 8.5 now supports ANSI-join syntax for SQL99. This new feature provides enterprise-wide compatibility with other ANSI-99 compliant databases and SQLBase developers are no longer limited to one outer join in their SQL statements; multiple outer joins are now possible.

A feature unique to SQLBase is the ability to safely have multiple servers running on a single machine. McLouth told Database Journal "First and foremost our many VARs and OEMs must be able to deploy their applications or solutions to customers worldwide without being concerned if a customer has another application using SQLBase already installed. SQLBase allows VARs and OEMs to install their solutions in complete safety and isolation from other possible SQLBase installations. This also brings up the other important side benefit, which is the ability to have more than one SQLBase engine running at the same time, on the same machine. This presents a real competitive advantage in the embedded database market."

SQLBase 8.5 will be available to the general public on September 8th. The desktop version will be available for $495 and the SQLBase 8.5 Developers Edition, (for development only, not for deployment), will be available for $29.95.
