SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC Beta 2

Microsoft recently released beta 2 of the SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC, a Type 4 JDBC driver that provides highly scalable and reliable connectivity for the enterprise Java environment. The SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC provides JDBC access through any Java-enabled applet, application, or application server. It delivers high-performance point-to-point and n-tier access to SQL Server 2000 across the Internet and intranets. The driver is optimized for the Java environment, enabling you to incorporate Java technology and extend the functionality and performance of your existing system.

In addition to the features available in the first beta release, the updated beta 2 release includes new features like support for XA transactions, sql_variant datatype, query timeout, and more. The SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC was also updated to address specific issues identified by our developer community. Enhancements in this release include improved quality and performance, and this stage of the beta program also lays the foundation for additional enhancements like improved security features and international support, which will be made to the driver prior to the final release later this year.

The JDBC Driver is designed for use with SQL Server 2000, 2000 SP1, and 2000 SP2, on the following operating systems: Windows XP, Windows 2000 SP2 (or later), AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, or Linux. The driver is also designed to work under versions 1.1.8, 1.2, or 1.3 of the Java Development Kit (JDK).

The commercially released SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC is intended to be compliant with the JDBC 2.0 specification. It will also support a subset of the JDBC 2.0 Optional Package, which provides the following functionality (see the documentation for details):

  • Java Naming Directory Interface (JNDI) for naming data sources
  • Connection Pooling
